C/249 Grounding Grid Installation at motor pool at the corner
of Pohick and Theote Roads on Fort Belvoir Va.

Construct a 1 ohm electrical grounding grid in a unit motor pool for the operation and maintenance of power generation and distribution equipment. Install a 280’ x 90’ grounding grid.

  • 3x 280’ North to South runs of 1/0 bare stranded copper conductor space 45’ OC
  • 15x 90’ East to West runs of 1/0 bare stranded copper conductor spaced 20’ OC
  • 57x ¾” x 10’ grounding rods enclosed in ground access wells located at the finished grade after paving.
  • Grounding rods will be placed at all copper conductor intersections and 10’ OC along the first and last East to West 90’ runs. (Fig 1)
  • Install ground grid at the location specified in figure 2.
  • Installation of ground access wells shall be flush with the finished asphalt after placement.
  • Each access well will contain a clamped replaceable 1/0 copper pig tails capable of being stowed in the well
  • Intersections will be joined through a thermo-welding process (e.g. “Cad-weld”)
  • Install ground grid at least 24” below grade, backfilled with local material.
